All Things Considered, March 2, 2009 · Teachers know the blank stare. It can be hard to know what students are absorbing in class. Well, technology to the rescue.

More teachers are equipping their classrooms with little keypads — often called clickers — that let students instantly, and anonymously, answer questions. Teachers say the clickers are improving the quality of education by measuring how engaged students are in the material they are learning.

Using SlideShare to Post Presentations

Have you heard of SlideShare? SlideShare http://www.slideshare.net/
SlideShare is a way to share and find presentations. You can then embedded the code. Here is a thought provoking presentations on IWB's (Interactive White Boards) and Interaction. Use the controls under the window to navigate.

Although this class is focusing on SMART Boards, I am modeling Web 2.0 tools (blogs, youtube/teachertube, slideshare, etc) as tool that teaching and learning. This way the materails are online, at your finger tips for you to use in class.

Snow Day! SMART Blogs, White Papers and more -- Readings

Can you believe yet another snow day? If you were using a blog with a class this would be a way to extend your teaching outside of the school day! Here are a few links to teachers using SMART Boards and blogging about their lessons. These blogs and White Papers are a great way extend your learning even after the course ends.
1. SMART Board Lessons Podcast: PDTOGO http://pdtogo.com/smart/
Teachers Ben Hazzard and Joan Badger produce a weekly podcast on using the SMART Board in the classroom. They cover a wide range of topics in their show, and the archives are organized by subject area. Since these are audio shows, busy teachers can listen in the car or on their ipods while doing other things.
2.Teacher LED: This site provides teaching resources for interactive whiteboards. According to the site, these resources “allow the teacher to explain, demonstrate and provide examples to further the students’ understanding of the lesson. By not circumventing the teacher’s role… they allow the teacher to provide as much instruction and examples as he/she deems necessary at an appropriate pace.” Most of the resources are math-related, but there are also some English and geography resources.
3. Using the SMART Board to Teach Engaging Lessons: This video podcast covers many of the SMART Board tools, including Smart Notebook 10. While it has a math emphasis, there are useful resources for all teachers.
4. Great K-3 Sites for Using the SMART Board: This is a collection of SMART Board resources from Julie Thompson for teachers of early elementary students.
5. Engaging Learners the SMART Board Way: This workshop takes learners through interactive SMARTboard activities, an overview of the Notebook software, 12 ideas for using the boards in class, and various curricular resources for the core content areas.
6. SMART Board, AirLiner, and Senteo Activities: This site has a number of activities that you can download and use in your classroom. Lots of great short videos. They also accept submissions, so you can contribute your ideas, too.

Formative Assessment - SMART Review

Here is the SMART Board review that we did together in class. To take online enter your name (pw smart). We discussed in class the importance of formative assessment. While many teachers are highly focused on tests, it is important to consider that we can build in many opportunities to assess how students are learning and then use this information to make beneficial changes in instruction. This diagnostic use of assessment to provide feedback to teachers and students over the course of instruction is called formative assessment.. This online quiz is an example of using a formative assessment tool. Pro Profs/Quiz School: allows you to create & find free online quizzes for learning or fun. Online Quiz maker for your classroom, they also have several othe components, such as flash cards and more. Learn more www.proprofs.com/quiz-school/ .

You can build assessments using the Lesson Activity Toolkit in the notebook or if you own "clickers" the Senteo's areintegrated into the Notebook and PowerPoint. For more information see the demo.

Below find the quiz reviwed in class.
.

MCAS questions and Capture to the Notebook

Here is an example demonstrated in class using the screen capture tool to get MCAS questions from the DOE Website into Notebook. I am using the SMART Recorder to record the steps, along with a microphone. I then uploaded the video to the blog. It takes a little while to buffer and play. I think I need some additional practice.

This is another great way to make math movies(or mathcasts) and upload them to a blog, wiki or portal for your students.

Here are a few addtional sites that already have math movies/mathcasts uploaded and theK-7 Mathcasts 500 Prject. There are sample K-16 using mathcast.

Last summer I saw a teacher and a group of students from California present on making math movies using tablets pc's and posting online http://www.mathtrain.com/.

You can use the SMART Recorder or Jing to capture anything you see on your computer screen and share it instantly...as an image or short movie. I particularly like this tool because you do not have to upload the file and it makes the embedded code to paste into the blog or wiki.

Aegom's Home - latest version of SMART’s award-winning Notebook software, Middle School Math for SMART Notebook consists of 200 exemplar Notebook lessons. ...purchase required.

Download YouTube and TeacherTube for NoteBook

This is an optional exercise. If you would like to import Youtube/Teachertube videos as flash files into the Notebook. In class I showed the following video
SMART Boards in Belgium video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jOelYYjN_k. This is a video that I use when opening a SMART Board class, it shows students interacting with the SMART Board. I have the file downloaded so I can play even if the network is down. See below for techniques to download videos.

Option 1
Using Firexfox as your browser. You will need to installed downloadhelper for your browser prior to using. In this :60 Sec Tech you will learn how to download a video from youtube, teachertube, or any other flash video site to your computer, and then import it into your smarttech notebook software.
Option 2
Using Internet Explorer and Zamzar
You can use Zamzar (http://zamzar.com/) to request a download in various file formats, You will need to provide an email address and will be notified when the the file is ready. To use in noteblook (.flv for moviemaker or powerpoint .avi) will work.

There are two reasons to do this. First, so that you can cut down on transition time between showing a video and using your smartboard and if YouTube is blocked in your school you will have access to the file. The second reason is so that you will not have to see any of the other linked videos or advertisements on that particular video page. Please remember, that copyright policies need to be thought of when downloading copyrighted materials.

Session 3 Online - Review/Lab

This is your opportunity to review material presented in class during session one and session two, focusing on the SMART Notebook, interactive websites and using the SMART Board.

Two-Minute Tutorials - Go to Two-Minute Tutorials
Review the quick, animated tutorials for the SMART Notebook software. http://smarttech.com/trainingcenter/tutorials.asp

3. Notebook Software 10 Basics
4. Objects in Notebook Software 10

7. The Notebook Software 10 Gallery

You can also watch videos created by teachers and SMART’s staff on our YouTube and TeacherTube channels, and see how easy it is to use a SMART Board interactive whiteboard to create extraordinary moments in your classroom.

Then practice in the SMART Notebook and on the SMART board.

Lesson Activity Toolkit – Tips – Tricks – Activities and Videos
Video tutorials (9 videos)
You must have Adobe Flash Player installed to watch the tutorials.

Lesson Planning and Delivery with Notebook Software 10 (PDF 423 KB) In this exercise, you'll learn how to create lesson material with Notebook software and add interactive elements to get students involved when you present it in class.

Here is Notebook Software Activity Guide to help you develop creative and interactive lesson activities. Need more ideas … go to SMART Lesson Activities.

Explore Interactive Web sites and/or DVD/CD's on the SmartBoard and post a comment on your progress today.

I have also emailed this information, if you are unable to post to the blog, please reply to the email and let us know what you are working on.
